Change is a Natural Part of Business Development

change is never ending. It is such an important factor for every business as growth that if ignored you will be simply left in the dust. It is not something that’s just come in in the last age. Changes here and it is here to stay. Companies who can encourage their employees to adapt well to change will always do better than those who do not. Those individuals and salespeople who can adapt well to change will likely grow faster and have much better careers than others who fear it.

In the first part of running any company someone might find that many changes are required. At no point in time will change ever cease, or the change be over, so there will never be a time when the company will stop growing. It is a fact of reality that we must all change and that includes the businesses where you work to.

Change can be dealt with in two different ways. Someone can fear change and always run from it, never growing, nor adapting, or providing the evolving solutions. The other alternative is to adapt and grow to change, always improving, and always becoming more flexible in front of any barriers that present themselves. This is in effect seen change as an opportunity to grow, not a threat.

It is not enough to have strong values and a strong vision is so important to be able to adapt and grow toward achieving that vision whilst holding those values tightly.there are some specific ways to help accelerate change and help others to attain a new perspective on new processes and policies that sometimes must be implemented.

It is often important to start with senior managers and other managers within the company so that they may then train others who are in other positions. It has kind of a cascading effect. You don’t have to be a senior manager to make change take effect.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Realise the changes here for good. You must embrace this notion in order to progress forward in life. This will also help you spread the word about being adaptable and flexible within your duties.

Keep meetings in formal. It’s often a good idea to prepare for the change before it occurs. By having informal meetings it can inform your staff and your customers in a relaxed environment, about new developments in products and marketing.

Make sure you think short term and long term. Always try to stay one step ahead.

Business Development Isn’t For Cowards

Being a Prospecting trainer and coach I get all kinds of excuses why Prospecting in the field isn’t practical. You probably know most of them.

So what is an alternative? Simple, but it isn’t for cowards.

The most under utilized Marketing/Prospecting tool around is public speaking.

You are an expert on some aspect of your product or service. Find audiences that use your type of product or service and tell them something that will help them use it more efficiently.

Association chapters, Chambers of Commerce all sorts of organizations have meetings that need speakers.

All you need to do is put together a 20 minute speech on one aspect of your produt or service that will benefit the audience. Now this can’t be a sales presentation. It has to be of benefit to the audience regardless of their future relationship to you or your company.

The benefits are two fold. First, you will establish yourself as an expert on this particular aspect of your product or service, and you will get free stuff.

Once you have hit the circuit in your territory, you will find that you become the “go to person” for information.

A couple of things to remember. Always bring a lot of business cards. Also, be sure to invite people to contact you anytime with questions that you will be glad to answer without any obligation.

If someone comes up after your talk with specific needs at that moment, you may want to ask for their card and find a time to meet with them. You don’t want to pre-empt others from talking to you by devoting all your time to one person.

Now, there are two things that can make this a difficult process.

Preparing the speech and getting the dates.

First, preparing the speech. You have to be a good speaker. I teach public speaking so I know that most people can be good speakers. It requires time, preparation, and rehearsal. If you aren’t willing to do all three, you won’t get far.

Second, you will have to Prospect for opportunities. That is contact organizations to get on their schedule. This isn’t too difficult but requires time some selling.

You know these things, so just do them. It is actually fun once you get the ball rolling. You get to meet and talk to a lot of friendly people; you get a lot of free stuff like pens, clocks, note pads and just about always a meal.

So if you don’t like straight out field Prospecting, give public speaking a try. I know it is Marketing not Prospecting, but it is a good step.

If you have any questions about this, send me an e-mail and I will be glad to help – no obligation.

Sell Well and Often,

Small Business Development – Creating Avenues For New Jobs

In these hard economic times, there is need to be creative in terms of looking for a supplementary source of income to our salaries. Developing a small business may be a good point to start from. By so doing, one will also create job opportunities for the jobless youths. This is especially true if the person setting up the venture is not able to run the enterprise alone.

Small businesses create avenues for new jobs for people who get laid off from the formal employment sector year in year out. The government, having realized this, has even set up an agency; Small Business Administration, that helps individuals develop such enterprises. It does so by extending loan facilities to the entrepreneurs and giving then technical advice on how to run the ventures.

Small Micro and Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) are therefore on the rise today. They fall under many categories and a just to describe a few, there is the survivalist enterprise which operates in the informal sector and is run by the unemployed persons. The income generated is below the poverty line and hence it only meets the basic needs of the operators.

Another example is the Micro enterprise. This one is usually rum by family members, who must not exceed five in total. It also operates informally, meaning that no license is required. Unlike the survivalist enterprise, the micro enterprise requires one to have at least basic skills of running an enterprise. It also holds a great potential of turning into a viable formal small venture.
